They are 14" long and fit perfectly. The calf shaping was just right. The red yarn I used at the top and bottom is left over from the red heather tam I made in December, so when I wear both the hat and the legwarmers I will actually be colored coordinated.

These were knit with Cascade 220 and a little bit of Jo Sharp DK Wool Heather. I think I'm going to weave in elastic in the top ribbing to help them stay up. After all, I made them to wear with skirts. Twisted ribbing in red at top and bottom; heathered chocolate brown for the leg, which I knit in stockinette. Result: It fits perfectly!

Now all I have to do is cast on the second one tonight and get going. With single-digit temps here in Mass. I could really use them! Just for fun I ended with a bit of red yarn on the ankle end.

But...I frogged it! Once I tried it on, I decided it was too short and too snug around my calf. Also I didn't like the stitch pattern. I mean, I liked it, but not for a legwarmer. So I've started again, casting on four additional stitches. This time I'll have a couple rows of red at both ends, and after the ribbing I'm going to do plain stockinette.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://legwarmeralong.blogspot.com/2006/01/one-down-sort-of.html' title='One Down . . . I wore them to a NYE party, Minty-style under my jeans, and do on a regular basis. I kinda love them.

I used the "Super-Easy Legwarmers" pattern from Last-Minute Knitted Gifts, done in Cascade 220 in 9460 and KidSilk Haze in "Drab". I did both at once, magic-loop style, and was going to keep going until I ran out of the Cascade, but I got impatient (and tired of the 1x1 rib), so I decided to make them shorter, perfect for under the jeans without getting too bulky. I could probably have done them both with less than one skein of the 220.

I will probably make another, longer pair at some point, once I decide what pattern to make. That, and once I get a few other WIP's finished up. I remember a pair of knitted tights from when I was a kid that had cables and such - I can see them re-interpreted as legwarmers, perhaps.

Finished legwarmers

 Finished legwarmers
Originally uploaded by Sophie_vf.
They're done! I actually finished them a few nights ago, but was too lazy to take a picture. I'm wearing the left leg warmer upside down. No wonder they felt kind of funny.

I'm already planning my next pair! I'm knitting up some Whitby socks for DH in a thick worsted, and I keep looking at them and thinking they would make swell legwarmers, sans foot of course.

more leggy details (not much more, though) on the blog.

just a short stack

I made myself another pair of ankle-warmers this holiday weekend while visiting my parents. I probably finished them in just a few hours total. The yarn is Manos (again), this time nicked from my mom, who recently knit herself a cardigan out of this Manos and had tons of leftovers.

Knit in brioche stitch (yes, again). This time I cast on only 32 stitches, as opposed to 40, because the first pair are getting loose. But I also didn't feel like doing any shaping, and 32 stitches aren't going to make their way up my calves. So I made them just long enough to fit, and called it a day. I still have loads more of the red Manos to make several more pairs!

Finally cast on!

I finally got the chance to cast on. I really just want to use up some leftover skeins of Noro Kureyon - and also find out how it will feel against the skin, since I'm thinking of making Lady Eleanor with Kureyon. But, that's not my problem. I don't even know why I typed that. haha. Anyway. In my stash, I have a lot of bulky-weight yarn. Mostly leftovers. So, what I'm asking is what size needles should I use for bulky yarn. I have 1 whole ball of lion brand Homespun, 1/2 ball of it in another color, and another 1/2 of it in a different color! I really want to use some of those. The smallest needles I have are 7 and the biggest are 35. I was thinking of using either 13, 15, or 17. Which do yall think would work the best?

One Pair Down!

First pair of legwarmers finished! These were a very quick knit on large double pointed needles. The yarn is a GGH wool that is discontinued, and the pattern is a simple 2x2 rib that I worked up. So I gave it a shot on Friday. After about six inches I was unhappy with the result and frogged it. The colors didn't work together, and although the yarns were all worsted weight, they didn't "flow" together well.

I decided what I really wanted was a solid color pair, in a dark color that won't show splashes of winter muck easily. So I stopped in at my LYS (Webs) on Saturday and got a lovely skein of Cascade 220 in a heathered chocolate brown.

I won't have time to start them until after Christmas--I'm in the home stretch on two projects that must be done and blocked by then. So I have time to think about the design. Plain stockinette--or something more interesting?

Crochet Legwarmers!

I know this is a KNIT along, but I found this cute pattern for crochet legwarmers and had to share!
